Project AWARE International Reef Clean Up Event organised by Borneo Dream in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia
Borneo Dream ran a reef clean up event in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park yesterday as part of Project AWARE International Clean Up Day.
The reef clean up event was a great success – we had four boats full of divers taking part and we collected 105kg of marine debris! We also performed the first ever Crown of Thorns clean up in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park on an area of reef near Pulau Mankan.

Green Turtle
This event was also supported by some of our local Business Partners – Sabah Parks, Borneo Divers, Marine Research Foundation and the Pacific Sutera Marina – we would like to thank them for their support and for helping to make this event the success it was.
The aim of Project AWARE International Clean Up Day is to raise awareness of the importance of conserving our underwater world and encouraging marine conservation activity. We helped forty participants help address a local underwater issue – marine debris in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

Cleaning the Reefs
We focused our efforts on cleaning up Pulau Sapi House Reef and Pulau Manukan house reef as part of this event. The marine debris was mainly plastic bottles and plastic bags. We did find some interesting items – an apron, a hat, one flip flop, one fin (for the other foot) and a toilet.
We also spotted a good mix of marine life too – two Turtles, Lion Fish, Blue Spotted Rays, Nudibranches, Dragonet and more.
Borneo Dream will be running reef clean up events on a regular basis. If you would like to participate in future reef clean up events organised by Borneo Dream when you are in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia then please contact the Borneo Dream team.
